A magnificent pair of vertical wooden wall carvings depicting the Ten incarnations or Avatars of Lord Vishnu - The creator of the Universe known as Dashavatar and handcarved from single blocks of local wood by skilled artisans from Tamil Nadu, South India.
The word Dashavatara derives from Daa, meaning’Ten’ and Avatar (avatra), meaning’incarnation and in these panels referes to the ten avatars of Vishnu as the central figure and is the mythological story of the 10 avatars of Vishu who descend to the terrestrial world to establish stability and order, time and again.
The list of Dashavatara varies across sects and regions as Krishna, Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Sri Rama, Balarama and Kalki.
