From our Heritage collection - Rare Vintage Hanging Brass oil Lamp supported by 4 Majestic Elephants and temple bells. This particular oil lamp to worship the Gods and Goddesses is claimed to be one from the several ancestral lamps from Tamil Nadu.
Called a Thooku-Vilakku - "Hanging Lamp" , this amazing Brass sculpture hangs from a solid thick chain handcrafted from bell metal.
Used in the pooja room or temple for the worship of Goddess Bhagavati which means a Goddess in Sanskrit - a general way people refer to the Hindu goddesses in Kerala, Goa and Maharashtrian states of India but can be used to refer to any of the Hindu goddesses like Durga, Kannaki, Parvati, Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kali.
Always an integral part of the prayer room, the presence of these lamps was an important aspect of ritual worship offered to a deity. The reverence for the Lamp is based on the symbolism of the journey from darkness and ignorance to light and the knowledge of the ultimate reality – 'Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya!.
