From our Heritage collection - Rare Vintage Hanging Lamp with a beautifully engraved peacock used for decades to worship the Goddesses and claimed to be one from the several ancestral lamps of a family from Kerala.
Called a Thooku-Vilakku - "Hanging oil Lamp", the lamp has an amazing patina finish and hangs on a chain with a hook with a delicately engraved peacock perched atop a round oil container ( which can be opened to pour in the oil ) and which keeps the diya in front always full of oil when lit with a wick.
Always an integral part of the prayer room, the presence of these lamps was an important aspect of ritual worship offered to a deity. Moreover, a day was kept aside for the worship of such lamps in the busy festival calendar, on one no moon day in the month of Shravan. This reverence for the Lamp is based on the symbolism of the journey from darkness and ignorance to light and the knowledge of the ultimate reality – 'Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya!.
