This is a magnificent sculpture of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of fertility, abundance, and well-being and depicted as Deepa Lakshmi carrying a diya or oil lamp upon which traditionally is lit with a cotton wick dipped in mustard oil.
Handcrated by skilled artisans from the south of India in a dark patina, Deepa Lakshmi’s sensuous feminine beauty is timeless with her exquisite slim figure and draped garbierre, intricate jewellery, head dress and elegant coiffure with fine engravings.
The goddess is a harbinger of good fortune and her countenance bespeaks of deep inner peace, a reflection of Santosha - Sanskrit for the deep contentment that is our innate nature and is the gift of the gods and goddesses.
When the sun goes down at the end of the day, the light of the 'deep' or 'diya' gives us the wealth of brightness and dispels the darkness which is normally full of sadness, lifelessness and ignorance.
