Vintage Brass Lota | Drinking Water Vessel Engraved With Elephants & Foral Motifs - L 20 cm x Ht 16 cm x Dia 11 cm
This exquisite pure brass Lota or vessel is handcrafted by artisans from the South of India brass displaying a beautiful, sculptural form with fine and delicate engravings all across the vessel - Engraved as per the experience and the skill of the artisan with traditional Indian motifs / designs and a Nature theme with elephants and floral motifs.
Brass Lotas were used in India to store and serve water. Water was tipped from the mouth of the vessel into the mouth and also to pour water over the hands and feet to cleanse.
The traditional Indian wisdom of storing water in brass vessels was meant for healthy living and Indians drank their water from brass pots till the beginning of 20th century using brass as a medium of storing and drinking water.
The vessel is now used by urbanites as part of their home decor collection or as a vase kept at a prominent place in the house with fresh flowers.
This fine example is of a form typical of the eighteenth century. Its surface is smooth and unembellished and is and equisite handcrafted heritage item.
