Vintage Coconut Scraper Hand Engraved & Carved From A Single Block Of Wood. L 64 cm x Dia 26 cm x Ht 5 cm

This is a 64 cm long vintage coconut scraper from Chettinad, South India with a large bowl measuring 26 cm dia and more than 50 years old, beautifully carved with floral designs and motifs from a single block of wood representing the rich cultural heritage and gracious living of a bygone era and the Nattukottai Chettiars.

The scraper with two main aspects has a wooden seating arrangement with one side ending as a bowl scooped out of the same wood. The pedestal for the raised platform is called Peetha in Sanskrit to which an iron rod in the shape of a serpent with raised hood is attached.

The iron hood is the scraper with serrated edges and positioned to allow the coconut scrapings to fall in the wooden bowl located directly underneath.

This coconut scraper is a beautiful reminder of gracious living representing the rich cultural heritage, remarkable taste for good food, regal lifestyle, art and architecture of the Chettiars.
