From our Vintage collection - This traditional Idli steamer or Patra as is popularly known and handcrafted in brass belonged to a one of the Chettiyar families from the south of India comprising of 

The steamer comprises of two mould-plates with 3 circular moulds of 8 cm each that are stacked on top of each other with a conical shaped cover and a handle and can steam 6 idlis at a time. 

Idlis are steamed rice cakes and one of the most popular south Indian snacks commonly served for breakfast. The batter prepared a night earlier and finished in the morning with a variety of herbs would be poured into the moulds and the mixture then steamed over a stove to be consumed with freshly prepared sambhar and coconut tomato chutney.

One can still find this steamer in most South indian homes where the elder of the family would light a small charcoal stove and steam not only idlis but delicacies like rice or sweet potatoes and whatever else required to be steamed for the day.

The steamer measures:
Height with cover 29 cm x Diameter 23 cm | Height without cover: 15 cm 

Dia of bottom insert 21 cm / Dia of top insert is 23 cm . 

Each rice cake mould measures 8 cm in dia.
