Rare vintage hand crafted wooden tikka box with 2 compartments on 4 wooden wheels with a pair identical hand painted horses on either side with a red, green and gold saddle in between.
Crafted from mango wood, such tikka boxes were used in the mid century for storing "Sindhoor" known as vermilion worn by married women in the parting of their hair to show respect for their spouse , their long life and a sign of marriage.
Alternatively, kept at the entrance of the temples with Vermilion for worshippers to put on the idols in the temple.
The tikka box can be opened with a sliding action of the horses revealing 2 compartments for the herbal powders.
