Pair of Exquisite Handcrafted Wooden Theyyam Busts - Traditional Kerala Folklore. Ht 32 cm & 26 cm

Theyyam (Teyyam, Theyam, Theyyattam) is a popular ritual form of worship of supernatural beings or divine ancestral spirits, in the North Malabar region of Kerala, exalting the beliefs of the ancient tribals who gave a lot of importance to the worship of heroes and the spirits of their ancestors.

People in the region consider Theyyam itself as a God. Theyyam incorporates dance, mime and music, performing over 400 different forms of Theyyams in front of shrines, without a stage, mostly by males belonging to the Vannan, Malayan and other related castes.

Considering themselves as a channel to the gods to seek their blessing through this traditional dance form, each artist represents a hero with great power and wear heavy make-up adorning themselves in flamboyant costumes, headgear and ornaments that are truly majestic and fill one with a sense of awe and wonder.

Crafted by artisans from Kerala, these wooden busts are sculpted from local wood, treated and then handpainted with intricate designs representing the local folklore and tradition of Theyyam.
