From our Vintage collection - A traditional elephant brass oil Lamp hanging on an ornate chain with the mythical Hamsa bird and hook beautifully engraved by skilled artisans from South India and handcrafted from excellent quality brass using the traditional century old method of metal casting.
The elephant is filled with oil by removing the chain and pouring the oil into the belly of the elephant. When closed, the oil pours out of the small spout from the belly and falls drop by drop into the oil well in front to ensure the wick continues to burn for hours when lit.
Such ornate hanging lamps have been used for decades for worship and is claimed to be one from the several heritage lamps of an ancestral family of Kerala.
Always an integral part of the prayer room, the presence of these lamps was an important aspect of ritual worship offered to a deity and are known to be auspicious.
