Traditional GajaLaxmi Vilakku Auspicious Oil Lamp From Kerala - 90 cm Length

A rare  Gajalaxmi Hanging Lamp that has been used for decades for the Goddess Worship.

Gajalakshmi Vilakku (Lamp), a traditional Kerala oil lamp with Lakshmi - Goddess of wealth sitting in the full bloomed lotus is crafted from solid brass. Beautifully carved elephants on either side of the Goddess, the arches and the delicate design between them makes this lamp even more graceful.

This exquisite lamp is often used in the worship of Goddess Bhagavathi (goddess in Sanskrit) which is the general way people refer to the Hindu goddesses in Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra states of India. It can be used to refer any of the Hindu goddesses like Durga, Kannaki, Parvati, Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kali.

Always an integral part of the prayer room, these lamps are lit during dusk for prayer and are usually hung in the porch. This reverence for the Lamp is based on the symbolism of the journey from darkness and ignorance to light and the knowledge of the ultimate reality.

The Lamp Measures:

Weight: 5.5 kilograms

Full length with chain : 90 cm

Width 26 cm | Height of base - 7 cm | Diameter 19 cm
