Sukunda lamps are indigenous to the Newar people of the Kathmandu Valley and play an important role in most rituals, including birth and marriage rituals.
The lamp is used for storing the oil which is ladled out and put on the shallow dish that projects from the front of the vase, where a wick is burned using the oil as fuel.
The handle is cast with a leaf frond which rises up to meet a five-headed cobra.
The front of the lamp is embossed with the figure of Ganesha, also known as Ganapati and Vinayaka, one of the most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon.
He is the god of wisdom, bestower of favours, giver of success in all undertakings and the remover of obstacles.
