This is an exquisite handmade wooden tikka box for storing of vermilion and is shaped like a peacock handengraved with floral motifs and the sliding cover which when open, displays 2 compartments / sections for keeping the powder dry and safe.
Such tikka or make up boxes were used in the mid century for storing " sindhoor" a red powder made from dried flowers known as vermilion and only worn by married women in the parting of their hair to show respect for their spouse , their long life and is a sign of being married.
