Traditional Brass Oil Lamp - "Thooku Vilakku" From South India. Length 67 cm x Diameter 19 cm

From our Heritage collection - This Vintage 67 cm long hanging Lamp or Thooku Vilakku as is traditionally known has been used for decades to worship the Gods and claimed to be one from the several ancestral lamps of a family from Kerala in the Kannur region.

This lingam Vilakku is handcrafted using the  Lost wax process of metal casting as per century old practises by the most skilled artisans with an amazing rich natural copper and gold patina and hangs on a 45 cm long brass link chain with a peacock.

Always an integral part of the prayer room, temples and domestic shrines, the presence of these lamps has been an important aspect of ritual worship offered to a deity and as per tradition are lit each day using ghee and wicks at dusk before any other lamp in the house.

This reverence for the Lamp is based on the symbolism of one's journey from darkness and ignorance into light and knowledge of the ultimate reality – 'Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya!.
